Solar hot water · Whalley, Clitheroe & the Ribble Valley

Use daylight
to support hot water.

Solar thermal systems use roof-mounted collectors to help heat water. They are different from solar photovoltaic panels, which generate electricity, and must work with the home’s hot-water system.

Solar hot water explained

Consider the roof and the cylinder.

Orientation, shading, storage and the existing heat source all affect whether the idea is practical.

Roof orientation, shading and access

Solar thermal collectors need a suitable area of sound roof with useful daylight and limited shading. Orientation, roof structure, pipe routes and safe installation access determine how much collector area is practical.

Solar hot-water cylinder and demand

Collected heat must be stored in a compatible hot-water cylinder, often with a dedicated solar coil. Cylinder capacity and daily hot-water use affect how much solar energy the household can use.

Boiler backup and solar controls

Solar thermal usually supports rather than replaces the main boiler or heat source. Pumps, sensors and controls manage heat transfer and protect the system, while backup heating maintains hot water when solar input is low.
