Types of Hot Water Cylinder

Vented Hot Water Cylinders

Vented hot water cylinder systems are the most common hot water system in the UK. The system comprises of a cold water header tank (storage tank) situated usually in the loft with a copper hot water cylinder located in an airing cupboard. The hot water cylinder is supplied by water from the header tank which is kept topped up from the main water supply. The water in the copper water cylinder is heated either by an electric immersion system or by a central heating boiler (or both). Water in the copper cylinder is used by the hot taps throughout the home.

The term 'vented' means that the header tank in the loft works also as an expansion tank - water in the copper hot water cylinder heats up and expands. Any excess water goes back into the header tank where it is safely vented away preventing a build up of excess pressure.

Unvented Hot Water Cylinders

Unvented hot water cylinder systems comprise a pressurised hot water cylinder which is supplied directly from the main supply. A major benefit of this system is that both hot and cold water are supplied at mains pressure to showers and taps throughout the home.

Mains supplied cold water flows into the cylinder and heated. When a shower or tap is turned on then the hot water is delivered at mains pressure.

The water cylinder includes and expansion tank and pressure valve to allow safe hot water expansion.
